The short answer

Rent a dumpster when you will fill it a little at a time over days or weeks, like a long remodel or a roof tear-off. Hire junk removal when you want a one-time cleanout, have heavy items, have no room for a container or can't do the lifting. Both often cost about the same for a typical home project.

A roll-off dumpster and a junk removal crew both get rid of a lot of stuff. The big difference is who does the work. With a dumpster, you rent a big steel box and load it yourself. With junk removal, a crew comes to you, loads everything and hauls it away the same visit.

Neither one is right for every job. Here is how they compare, so you can choose the one that fits your project.

How a roll-off dumpster works

A roll-off dumpster is an open-top steel container. A truck drops it off at your home or job site. You fill it over the rental period. When it’s full or your time is up, the truck comes back and hauls it away.

Sizes are measured in cubic yards. Large waste companies like WM and Republic Services offer 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 yard boxes. A 10 yard box is meant for heavy loads like concrete or dirt. A 20 yard box is common for roofing jobs and house cleanouts. The biggest boxes are for large remodels and construction.

A few things to know before you rent:

  • You need space. The truck needs a flat, clear spot with no low wires or tree branches. WM asks for at least 100 feet of length for the drop-off.
  • There are weight limits. Each box has a weight limit. Going over it can raise your bill. So can keeping the box past the rental period.
  • You load it evenly. Nothing can stick out over the top, or the truck may not be able to haul it.
  • Some items are banned. Batteries, chemicals, liquids, asbestos and hazardous waste are not allowed. Many companies also say no to tires and electronics. Some ban appliances. Rules change by company and location, so ask first.
  • Street placement may need a permit. A box on your own driveway usually doesn’t need one. A box on a public street, alley or sidewalk often does. Check with your town before the drop-off.

How junk removal works

Junk removal is a hauling service. You call for a quote, and a crew comes on the day you pick. They carry items out from wherever they sit, load them into a truck or trailer and haul them away. Nothing sits in your driveway.

Most junk removal companies price by how much room your items take up in the truck. You don’t pay for empty space in a box you didn’t fill.

At Medleys Junk Removal & Hauling, we sort every load. Furniture in good shape gets donated when possible. Metal and appliances go to scrap, and clean wood is recycled where it can be. Only what’s left goes to the landfill.

When a dumpster makes sense

A dumpster is often the better pick when the junk shows up slowly over time. Some good fits:

  • Long remodels. If you are gutting a kitchen over several weekends, you can toss debris as you go.
  • Roofing jobs. Old shingles can go straight from the roof into the box.
  • Big DIY projects. If you have helpers and time, and you don’t mind the lifting, a dumpster can work well.
  • Steady debris on a job site. Crews that make waste every day may want a box on site the whole time.

A dumpster works best when you have room for it on your own property and you can load it yourself.

When junk removal makes sense

Junk removal is often the better pick when you want the job done in one visit. Some good fits:

  • One-time cleanouts. A garage, basement, attic, shed or whole house can be cleared in a single trip.
  • Heavy or bulky items. Couches, hot tubs, pianos, gun safes and appliances are hard to lift into a tall box. A crew carries them out for you.
  • No room for a container. Steep driveways, small lots, HOA rules and busy streets can make a dumpster hard to place.
  • You can’t do the lifting. If you have a bad back, limited time or no helpers, a crew saves you the work and the risk of injury.
  • Items a dumpster won’t take. Many rental companies ban appliances. A junk removal company can send them to scrap and recycling instead.

What about remodels with no room for a dumpster?

You don’t have to choose a dumpster just because the job is long. Some haulers offer pickups on a schedule instead. For example, Medleys does construction debris removal as one-time hauls or recurring pickups. We can time pickups between trades so the site is clear when the next crew arrives. This can work well when a container isn’t allowed or won’t fit.

For big one-off loads like a torn-down shed, a pile of storm limbs or a trailer’s worth of debris, see our hauling service.

How the costs compare

The cost is often closer than people expect. Across the industry, renting a dumpster usually costs $300 to $600 for a week, depending on its size. Junk removal usually costs $100 to $800 or more, based on how much space your items take up.

The dumpster price covers the box, drop-off and pickup. You still supply the labor. Extra weight, extra days and banned items can add to the bill.

The junk removal price includes the loading, hauling and disposal. You pay only for the space you use.

For prices by load size, room and item, see our junk removal cost guide.

Questions to ask before you choose

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Will my junk show up all at once or bit by bit over weeks?
  2. Do I have a flat spot on my own property for a big container?
  3. Can I and my helpers lift and load everything safely?
  4. Do I have appliances, tires or other items a dumpster may not take?
  5. Would my HOA or town need a permit or approval?

If most of your answers point to “all at once,” “no room” or “no lifting,” junk removal is likely the better fit. If you have a long project, space and helpers, a dumpster may be the way to go.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to rent a dumpster or hire junk removal?

For many home projects the cost is close. Renting a dumpster usually runs $300 to $600 for a week, depending on size. Junk removal usually runs $100 to $800 or more, based on how much room your items take up. With a dumpster you do the loading. With junk removal the crew does it, and you pay only for the space you use.

What size dumpster do I need?

Roll-off dumpsters usually come in 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 yard sizes. A 10 yard box suits heavy material like dirt or concrete. A 20 yard box is common for roofing jobs and house cleanouts. The 30 and 40 yard boxes are for big remodels and construction. Ask the rental company to help you pick.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster?

Usually not if it sits on your own driveway. If it goes on a public street or sidewalk, many towns require a permit. Some HOAs have their own rules too. Call your town or county before the drop-off.

What can't you put in a rental dumpster?

Rental companies ban hazardous waste, chemicals, batteries, liquids and asbestos. Many also ban tires and electronics, and some ban appliances. The list changes from company to company, so ask for it before you start loading.

Does Medleys rent dumpsters?

No. Medleys is a junk removal and hauling company. We bring a truck and trailer, load your items, haul them off and clean up. For remodels, we can also do recurring pickups so the site stays clear without a container.
